Chicken Biryani @ No Tomatoes! Truck, Los Angeles
I have a litmus test that I conduct on Indian restaurants, aunties and moms to determine their legitimacy in an Indian kitchen – I taste their biryani. Your kebabs can be tender, your samosas can be optimally doughy, but if your biryani isn’t up to snuff then it’s a no-go.
The chicken biryani off the No Tomatoes! food truck is a GO all the way. It’s 100% fantastic. Green light it, order it, eat it up. This is top notch authentic, flavor-explosion-in-your-mouth biryani. For those of you unfamiliar with biryani, it’s rice kicked up with spices and aromatics, cooked with chicken that has also been kicked up with spices and aromatics. The No Tomatoes! biryani is a saucier biryani than I’m used to, so it was spicier and more aromatic.
And I loved it.
Their samosas were impressive, too. They’ve got the taste/texture ratio just right: Flavorful and spicy without being overpowering, crispy and doughy without being too soft on the inside. And all this amazingness off of an Indian food truck. Who would have thought?
